Construction Excellence Under Pressure
Teamwork and landscaping resources create success for revolutionary cardiovascular institute
THE CHALLENGE
Massive Project Undergoes Last-Minute Changes
If you've ever built a house or taken on a renovation, you know to expect the unexpected. Yet, when the project at hand calls for a 383,000-square-foot cardiovascular center and accompanying central plant, including site work and landscaping, the unforeseen can have a huge ripple effect.
Such was the case for the Prebys Cardiovascular Institute at Scripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego, Calif. As the cornerstone and first phase of a 25-year master plan to transform the hospital campus, the new institute and energy plant were scheduled to take three years for completion.
Unfortunately, design and scope revisions arose. Despite this, the deadline didn't waver. Could they make it happen?
THE SOLUTION
Pre-Planning, Collaboration, and Resources Come Through
Not surprisingly with a project of this magnitude, the work assigned to our team was extensive. Our to-do list included irrigation, landscaping, site furnishings, decomposed granite trails, bioswales, curbs and sidewalks, plazas with decorative colored concrete, custom concrete seating, decorative concrete planters, and a green roof with more than 26,000 plants.
Because of significant design changes and scope revision and time lost, our timeline for the work was compressed to just 90 days.
Experience won out and thanks to our team's intense pre-planning and ability to problem solve quickly and efficiently, we made it happen. By tapping into our national and local network of experts, collaborating and communicating throughout the process, and remaining focused on the deadline, we got the work done on time and on budget.
THE OUTCOME
Successful Work Results in Revolutionary Design and Future Contracts
Today, the Prebys Cardiovascular Institute treats 76,000 patients annually and is the most state-of-the-art, comprehensive heart care center in the San Diego area. Renowned for its revolutionary design features and green, beautifully landscaped grounds and views which encourage patient healing, the institute is a fitting beginning to Scripps' transformation. We're thrilled that we'll be a part of this future. Because of our dedicated work on phase one of the project, the client chose our team as the site-work contractor for future phases of the project.
